Slip testing across Ceredigion
An almanac of floor safety for the county — independent, UKAS-accredited testing, with grip measured wet and dry and set out plainly.
PTV scale — 36+ is low slip risk
Reading I — The invisible number
Cross a flagged hotel floor in Aberystwyth on a wet morning, or a care-home corridor in Cardigan, and you are trusting something you cannot see: the grip between shoe and floor. It is invisible, and it shifts as floors wear and cleaning routines change.
The Health and Safety Executive is blunt about the stakes — slips and trips are the most common cause of major injury in UK workplaces. The good news is that grip is not a mystery. It can be measured precisely, and we are independent and accredited to measure it, right across Ceredigion.
Table I — Reading the pendulum (PTV)
| PTV result | Slip risk |
|---|---|
| 0–24 | High |
| 25–35 | Moderate |
| 36 + | Low |
A weighted arm swings a calibrated rubber slider across the floor to reproduce a slipping heel, recording a Pendulum Test Value, wet and dry, in three directions. 36 or above is the recognised low-risk threshold.
| Surface roughness (Rz) | Slip risk |
|---|---|
| Below 10 | High |
| 10–20 | Moderate |
| Above 20 | Low |
Where floors get contaminated — a kitchen, a dairy, a fish quay — surface roughness (Rz), in microns, is measured alongside the pendulum. We are accredited for both, to BS 7976-2 and BS EN 16165.

Reading II — Whose duty it is
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Workplace Regulations, every employer and occupier must keep floors safe so far as is reasonably practicable, and assess the risk.
In care settings here in Wales, Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) expects slip risk to be actively managed. A measured PTV turns ‘we clean regularly’ into evidence an insurer, the HSE or CIW will accept.
Reading III — Independent, and accredited
A test is only worth as much as the people behind it. This service is delivered by Surface Performance — an entirely independent laboratory with no connection to any flooring manufacturer, treatment company or equipment maker, and no commission from anyone.
We test floors; we do not sell them, so nothing nudges the number. It is the same accredited work trusted on sites from Amazon and Gatwick to British Airways and TUI, and our environmentally controlled laboratory tests over 300 flooring products a year.
Table II — By the numbers
| Finding | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Most common cause of major workplace injury | Slips & trips | HSE |
| Estimated annual cost to UK employers | £500m+ | Industry estimate |
| Estimated cut in claim risk with regular testing | ~50% | Industry estimate |
Reading IV — Across the county
From Aberystwyth and the Rheidol down the Cardigan Bay coast to Aberaeron, New Quay and Cardigan, and inland to Lampeter and Tregaron — the SY and SA postcodes of the county, and nationwide beyond.
Wherever staff or the public use your floors, we can test them and prove they are safe. See the full coverage →
